I want to help my girlfriend's mom get some dentures. She is on ssdi and has health coverage. I know of others that have recieved this benefit and need some advice on what steps to take to help her.
Social security is definitly going though changes as alot of baby boomers knew it would. The amount of new filings for ssdi increased dramatically in 2010 due to economic issues and an aging baby boom generation. I worked 28 yrs and finally became disabled due to aids and crytococcal menegitis. The aids was my fault due to risky behavior in the 80s but I did work hard even after my diagnosis until the menegitis effects messed up my cognitive skills. Ive met people who are on ssi or ssdi most on ssi seem to be illegal women around of hispanic descent, for some reason one always seems to be looking around corners of buildings here and acts like she lives here, not sure maybe she does, everyonce in a while cops roll through, if she is outside she will hightail into the breezeway....Its not an old issue even in the early 90s I would see illegals in the barrion where I lived who lived 5 deep in cochroach infested rooms in houses. The kids would go to local schools and were on some type of public assistance. I worked hard got myself out of that scene became an electrician bought a house truck tools only to see it go away when I got sick so now I am back in the poor side of life on ssdi. If anyone says ssdi or ssi is a godsend they are in denial...it is geared towards those who are truly disabled not the person with a limp or too damn fat to carry themselves driving a cadailac around with a handicap placard. Those are the ones who make me sick.

To whom it may concern:
As I continue my battle with SSI, I frighten myself. I always doubt because of my age, people mock that quite a bit. Then my english and attempting to go to school. All this battling has destoryed me physically, mentally, and emtionally. How much longer will this last till i finally can get some insurance, or finally be able to take my medicine and work on a better life? Thats all I trully want, a better, brighter future for myself and my family. Yet my disabilites constantly get in the way. IED (intermitten explosive disorder) it is one of the scarest things you could ever imagine. Its like the incredible hulk raging through your whole body, and yet inside you really just want to be calm and civil. Your none stop battle with yourself and the green monster make it hard to even keep a beautiful, lasting relationship with a significant other. Ladies and gentleman, please if you are reading this, all i seek is information on how to win my case and to gain medical insurance for something that has been with me haunting me since 5 years old. I thank each and everyone one of you, and I encourage you, if your truly dont belive that someone like myself can be fully disabled. Please read my blogs and posts, then judge.

I am desperate and have no where else to turn. I will present a synopsis of my situation, I am not offering a justification for my circumstances, merely an explanation and a plea for rectification of this matter.
I am a single mother. I work hard and receive no public assistance. I have an 18 year old son, of whom I am legal guardian and sole provider. He has been diagnosed ADHD, Bi-Polar, OCD, Autisim, Personality Disorder and MR. These diagnosis has affected Zach, and myself, negatively in so many ways. All of the information I am provding may be confirmed if need be or you could refer to SSI application which has lengthy documentation.
I applied on July 21, 2011 for disabilty benefits for Zach. I provided every documentation requested and also other information I felt may be beneficial for his case. On September 8, 2011, I called the office of Social Security to inquire as to what the status was regarding his claim. At that time, I was informed that medical records from Dr. Susan Ferrell's office had not been received, I contacted Dr. Ferrell's office and had them refax the medical records. I called on September 23, 2011 and was told he may need IQ testing, she thought not but she would notify me via mail within one to two weeks if he did require IQ testing. Testing was obtained within last year (sent to SS) and his score was 58. Zach was diagnosed with the variety of special needs since he was apx. 3 years old, requiring numerous meds and testing every aspect of his lack of capabilities. At that point, I had not had any communication with the SS office advising needed addtional testing since September 23rd when I last called. October 5, 2011, I called SS office and I am informed that all medical records had been received but they had not been written up nor submitted to doctor. Also, called Disability Examiner on October 5th, I left a message informing the examiner of the dire financial need that Zach was experiencing and the monies that had to be paid by myself for insurance, medications and visits to his team of doctors. I inquired in my message was there anything that I personally do to speed up this process and ask that she please return my call, she did not return call nor have any sort of communication to me. October 14, 2011 at 8 AM and was told couldn't tell what claim status was and that the disabilty examiner would be calling me promptly regarding Zach's claim, again, no phone call or communication on her part (Disability Examiner-Chiqueta Wilson, phone 800-887-0821,ext. 6226).
If Zach is not promptly approved for SSI and the Medicaid that comes with it, I will be forced to terminate his school enrollment so that he would be eligible for Medicaid. Zach's medications are numerous and there is no way I can pay for these out of pocket. His medications, mental health appointments and monitoring drugs now taken due to the quanity and adverse affects are vital for Zach to maintain any sense of normalancy in his life, without them, he is uncontrollable and dangerously impulsive, becoming a danger to himself and others.
I am pleading with you, please don't ignore my cries for help enabling Zach to become just another statisic.
Receiveing calls on my job jepordizes my position and maintaining consistent employment is mandatory since there are no other forms of financial support in my home. Due to this factor, I authorize my sister, Deborah Collins Booe (336-331-3985) to discuss this matter with you as well as relay information to you. I am so desperate for Zach at this point it is disheartening, I have been his only advocate since we began this journey and now that he is reaching another milestone in his life (becoming 18) we still continue to struggle in obtaining reasonable expectations from the government.
I look forward to hearing from you soon. I appreciate the opportunity to address my concerns with you and for the prompt, positive input that I trust will be forthcoming.

I am 21 yrs old with Scoliosis and depression and anxiety. I have filed for SSI and I'm suppose to hear back from them within the next month or two whether I will get it or not. I'm unemployed and soon to be homeless. I don't think my landlord will wait another month for the SSI's decision. I have a dog that I refuse to get rid of so a homeless shelter won't do. I need any advice I can get as to where or how I can get money just to hold him off for a few months before I am completely homeless or if I do not get the SSI.
apply for food stamps and medicaid through your local dcf office. also see if you can find a church in your local area to see if you can find out if they deal with the Agency called Angel Food. There is a local church in my area who is connected with Angel Food To where I can go place an order for food from this church and it cost like 35 dollars for a bag of food they then place the order through Angel food and then all the orders are delivered on a specific date and the church will give you a pick up time frame. hope that helps
There is always the salvation Army or churches that will help. I have had to do this also. I am so sorry for everything that you are going thru. What about low income housing? Do you have that where you are?
get paid commission on how many sales I make for a very large electric company in TX. The company I work for has low rates since it is one of the oldest electric companies in TX. I am telling you all of this because I need to make some money. Please read my next comment. I know how to work the systems since I have been there for some time. I can waive all deposits for setup with us plus send you out a $100 Visa gift card. There is no fees for setup and I can lock you in 10.9 cents/kwh for 18 months. For info email your contact information to laceedunn@yahoo.com. I can also restart your service within 24 hrs if you have been shut off. There is a $35 priority setup fee but no additional charges other than that (and you pay that with your first bill not at the time of setup.)
in response to nini3...yes I am on medicaid too. I live in tacoma,wa. I have called around for years trying to find mental health. either the doctors have their fill of medicaid recipients, or they just don't take it. After my recent suicide attempt and stomach pumping experience... I was referred to comprehensive mental health as usual. It is a 3 month crisis intervention program which is all I seem to get. they get me steady on a whole lot of pills then cut me off after 3 months. I have been trying to get onto greater lakes mental health(g.l.m.h.) for years.... that's a whole nother story in itself. anyway to make a long story short I decided to do things a little different this time. I have to go to my regular doc. now every month to monitor the acetaminophin level in my body to make sure I didn't destroy my liver. So I asked her to give me a referral to g.l.m.h.. To my astonishment they actually got me in! I went to my first therapy appt. last week and will go weekly as long as they let me.(lord knows I have a lot to get out of me) and a med. eval. in 2 weeks. According to g.l.m.h. the program is only for 6 months due to budget cuts they can't provide ongoing mental health just crisis intervention. My new therapist assures me that I can sign right back into the program after they close the first file. So I guess every 6 months I will have to redo the entire intake process again and they can't guarantee I would have the same therapist... but at least I will have one right?
I don't understand why......
I have SEVERAL mental disabilities that prevent me from living a productive life. on top of the things I was born with (bipolar, o.c.d.,nervous disorder,anger control problem,etc.) that I have to deal with everyday, I have also developed SEVERE p.t.s.d. and anxieties/panic attacks. I have been on my own since 12 yrs old, raped and molested more times than I've ever kissed anyone. got into and off of drugs, worked the streets to survive, and prayed that the next person I met would not beat me and actually love me.I have been on s.s.i. for several years. I am grateful for the monthly check (although it is hard to make it stretch),I am grateful for the medical coverage(even though I have a tooth rotting away in my mouth because it will only pay for root canals on the back teeth and mine's one tooth too close to the front... I paid for the root canal myself... only to find out they don't pay for crowns either! so now my tooth broke off and I can't fathom the idea of missing a front tooth!) but I don't understand why it doesn't cover my mental health? I've been told several times throughout my life that with extensive long term therapy and medication it is highly possible that I could live a relatively productive life. Yet I'm sitting here in and out of emergency rooms and temporary crisis counseling services year after year because I can't find any resources to help me get stable. s.s.i. has noone who can help me find a mental health program. all they do is provide the card... everyone I call doesn't take d.s.h.s. or is only a temporary program.
I just need to find some permanent mental health help!

TO APPLY FOR SSI or HAVE A SOCIAL WORKER DO IT
You should bring certain items when you apply. Even if you do not have all of the things listed below, apply anyway. The people in the Social Security office can help you get whatever is needed. Please bring:
Your Social Security card or a record of your Social Security number;
Your birth certificate or other proof of your age;
Information about the home where you live, such as your mortgage or your lease and landlord’s name;
Payroll slips, bank books, insurance policies, burial fund records and other information about your income and the things you own;
The names, addresses and telephone numbers of doctors, hospitals and clinics that you have been to, if you are applying for SSI because you are disabled or blind;
Proof of U.S. citizenship or eligible noncitizen status.
You also should bring your checkbook or other papers that show your bank, credit union or savings and loan account number so we can have your benefits deposited directly into your account. Direct deposit protects benefits from loss, theft and mail delay. The money is always on time and ready to use without making a trip to the bank.

I am 62 years old and ready to start getting my benefits. I have two children aged 16 and 17 who are still in high school. Can they also get benefits on my record?
Yes. When you qualify for Social Security retirement benefits, your unmarried children also may qualify to receive benefits on your record. Eligible children can be your biological child, adopted child or stepchild. A dependent grandchild also may qualify.
To receive benefits, your unmarried child must be:
Younger than age 18;
Between 18-19 years old, but in elementary or secondary school full time;
A full-time student (no higher than grade 12); or
Age 18 or older and severely disabled (the disability must have started before age 22).
Each child may receive a monthly payment up to one-half of your full retirement benefit amount. However, there is a limit to the amount that can be paid to you and your family. The limit varies, but is generally equal to about 150 to 180 percent of your retirement benefit.
Can a child receive benefits on the record of a grandparent?
A dependent grandchild or step-grandchild may receive benefits on the record of a grandparent if the following requirements are met:
The grandchild's natural or adoptive parents are deceased or disabled:
At the time the grandparent became entitled to retirement or disability insurance benefits or died; or
At the beginning of the grandparent's period of disability which continued until he or she became entitled to disability or retirement insurance benefits or died.
The grandchild was legally adopted by the grandparent's surviving spouse in an adoption decreed by a court of competent jurisdiction within the U.S.
The grandchild's natural or adopting parent or stepparent must not have been living in the same household and making regular contributions to the child's support at the time the grandparent died.
The grandchild must have lived with the grandparent in the United States before reaching age 18 and received at least one-half support from the grandparent for the year before the month the grandparent began receiving retirement or disability benefits or died.
There is help available for those of you who are having a health problem and cannot work. Ther is a possibility you may be able to receive SSI if you have become disabled. I was ill for quite a while before I received benefits because I was not aware of the services offered. For information on SSI you can go to www.socialsecurity.gov. You can also call 1-800-325-1213.
People who get SSI may be able to get social services from the state they live in. These may include free meals, housekeeping help, and You can get information about the services in your area from your state or local social services or welfare office.transportation. If you receive SSI you wil probably be able to receive food stamps also.
I hope this information helps anyone faced with a serious health problem.
in response to Starshine...This country treats animals better than people. we put them out of their misery when the time is right. However, the disabled and theaged are forgotten and not cared for. Other countries care for their senior citizens and see that they have respect and some quality of life. Here you are on your own. If you are lucky enough to have family members that care you have it better than others. However, the majority have no one and have to fend for themselves with no help. It is time that this country stands up for it's own. There are many people who live across the border using Post office boxes to recieve social security checks. No one should be allowed a social security check unless they have become a citizen of the United States. Even then social security cards and work permits aren't monitored enough. Many people get legal social security cards take them across the board and give them to family members and since there are no dealth records from other countries you have 2 or more generations working on the same card and eventually drawing social security. there needs to be a monitoring system. The whole system is currently messed up and people like you and me will pay the price.
I called the White House on another issue the right to die in Oregon and Rumsfield was going after the passage of it. I told the lady who answered the phone why I wa upset as a man I knew disabled in a wheelchair and pain medicine couldn't help it would kill him. Well, after 20 yrs of the pain and feeling bones coming through he wheeled himself into a vacant swimming pool and drowned to end it all so I would have rather him have the right to be put out of his misery other than drowning to death. And this was before 911 , I told her I think we should close the borders as I have known that people can come into this country into Texas set up a mail box and get social security checks then go back home across the border.
in response to Starshine...This is where you need to write to your representatives. People who have worked all their life and supported this country aren't qualify yet immigrants coming in from other countries who have never paid into the system are qualifying for disability insurance. What's with that. I can name you person after person who has come in with diabetes and aren't citizens and qualify immediately. We all need to stand up to the government on this issue.
You are right about the situation and what your attorney said. I know someone who went to a mental health person (shrink?) and she got low income housing fast! I don't qualify for social security unless I make so much for next four years and it keeps going up the amount as I mostly worked for a government job and they don't pay into social security so you need to save plus take out disablity insurance in case something happens where you get sick.
in response to jana4...There is one way in which you can speed thinks up if you can get in touch with a senator.Senators have alot of pull.I knew a senator who campaigned at my parents many years ago.If someone who had a disability or was a senior he went right to work & got them the help they needed.I had someone contact him & he ended up with a socia; security check in less than two weeks.He Was Senator Dennis Deconcinni.
You are one of the lucky ones. They are still denying many people who are in need of disability. I know of one situation where she will probably be dead before they approve it and it's going on seven years. They have also gotten very picky about disability in the last two years. They are not approving for some things that were approved before and that is why they now have the list of 50 qualifying areas. I have been waiting two years. My doctor is furious and I was just called by my attorney this week and the appeal was denied. I now have to start the complete process over. I can only stand fifteen minutes and walk one fourth of a block due to the pain in my back. I have been through tons of medical evaluations. I have no income and the system is broke. I have been told by both social security and my attorney that If I become homeless and go to a shelter I will get it faster. Why should I? I paid into the system for forty years. It really depends on your type of disability. I have a friend whose husband can't breathe and has severe problems daily. It took him six months to qualify. I talk with people on a daily basis who are struggling to qualify including people who have reached the age of social security and it takes forever. But with disabilities the average is 3-5 years. This is my field of expertise and I deal with this on a daily basis. I have another friend who has been fighting for three years due to severe injuries from domestic violence which not only affected her ability to work but her ability to walk. They won't even talk to her before May. People don't realize how many ligitimate situations are being pushed aside and having to wait and their is no help for housing, food, etc if you don't have children. It's a very serious situation which is only going to be compounded by our economy.
Really you don't need a lawyer for certain disabilities but will always be denied the first time.If you don't get a lawyer after the first denial that doesn't mean you may have to wait 5 or more years.They are working disability different now they are trying move it thru faster so they don't have all the red tape.If you truely need it now you will most likely get it the second time.The process was changed when Clinton was in office.I got mine the third time around with no lawyer.So it took me 1.5yrs,when I first applied I was in a chair.
When applying for social security disability you can expect to be denied. They usually deny you at least three times before they start to look at your seriously. Don't give up keep appealing. If you want to reduce the stress of the appeals then it is best after your first denial to get a disability lawyer. The average rate that they will charge is %25 of the initial payment. You will have an initial interview and then from that date until your qualifying date that period of time the payment is retroactive. There are 50 categories that are now listed as qualifying disabilities. These can be found on the Social Security website. I would research them and make sure your disability falls under one of those categories. Critical information is updated medical reports. Lawyers know of additional loop holes such as a doctors letter on dire need, being homeless etc. IF you don't want to use an attorney you can expect a 5-7 year wait on the average. From the time you appeal is an 18 month to 24 month waiting period. Everytime medical changes or your circumstance changes social security needs to be notified. Don't try to guess what you think they will do. File the paper work and expect to be denied without being discouraged and then appeal. that's how it works. The amount you can recieve depends on how much you have paid in to social security and the type of benefits you are awarded. Any social security office can explain that to you. Social security will expect you to try working with vocational rehabilitation if at all possible. Be familiar with what vocational rehabilitation does. IF you have any questions please blog me.

My husband has been out of work since Feb. 06 after hurting his back pretty bad. He is getting underpaid by Workers Comp and they have refused to pay for his physical therapy, MRI, and some meds he is on. I get SSI due to my own health problems and am awaiting another surgery. I am hoping to go back to school in January 07 to finish my degree.
We have a lawyer for the workers comp BUT things work SO slow. We thought that the underpayment for the last 9 months would have come through by now so that we could buy our girls (12, 8, and 3) Christmas and get ahead on the bills. It hasn't. We barely pay the bills monthly, always get shut off notices, hubby has had to stop PT because we can't afford it anymore, our savings were depleted from medical expenses that workers comp was supposed to pay but have yet to pay us for.
I would like to be able to get a few things for each of the girls for Christmas. I am trying to get help locally BUT we make too much ($600 too much a month but NO ONE adds in the costs of the medical we pay out of pocket! just rent & elec are counted as expenses).
So, I came across this site and am asking if there are any people out there wanting to adopt a family for Christmas my girls are such good kids. They really deserve a good Christmas this year. My oldest won't even ask for anything because she knows we are broke. Makes me sad! She just wants her sisters to get something. She even offered her birthday money to me to buy gifts for her sisters from Santa.
I understand if you can't help my family but thanks for reading of my situation.

I need help asap. I'm a 43 yr old divorced for 4 years after a 22 year abusive marriage and am now with some one thatr drinks constantly and does many drugs. I do no not do these things and cannot stand it any longer. I am waiting for a hearing for SSI but my attorney says it will be a few months before it gets resolved. I cannot work and my children are no longer under the age of 18 so I cannot get help from the state. I suffer from agoraphobia, severe depression and severe anxiety and panic attacks. I am homebound most of the time because of the agoraphobia. I am getting treatment but it is going very slowly. I live in his apartment with him and i feel i will never get we;ll if i cant get out of here and away from him. i cant even get utilities in my name because i got them here at first in my name and they were disconnected because he didnt pay them as he promised. so i am like a prisoner here and feel very suicidal most of the time. i need to be able to get my own place for my own health and safety but do not have the means or any family to help so have begun to check online. please i would greatly appreciate any advice or help that would be offered. thank you so much.
